Search for obscuring gas reveals obscuring organic material

We sought molecular clouds using a commonly observed chemical species – carbon monoxide (CO). Can you identify the species we have found here?

University of Montpellier (France) PhD candidate, Johanna Itam-Pasquet, has measured variations in the spectrum of light from some stars in a nearby cluster – a process called ‘reddening’ (i.e. the light appears more red than it should). Johanna hopes to identify the structure of the clumpy gas clouds which interfere with the passage of starlight to cause this phenomenon. The identification of Australian bird species interfering with the passage of skylight is also of interest today…
